As most history buffs would know, the Treaty of Westphalia that took place in 1648 was a treaty that decided modern nation-states after the Thirty Year war in Europe. Borders were decided among the ruling Counts, Princes, and Dukes. The basic formality was to be fulfilled on certain main factors such as resources, the people, concentration of those people, Language, and their belief system – so as to say the religion they followed. The laws that were created in accordance to that treaty developed modern political thought and the basics of international law to safeguard nations and their sovereignty.
However, these factors have no changed massively. The arms race was fairly barbaric in comparison to today now almost 400 years later, and the wars were fought with extreme fierce thrusts and close encounters. Nowadays a button releases a missile and puts a city in ruins, rather than a classic siege. The problem with this example is that due to the changes made via war, have led migration to be a great concept of concern and interest in modern-day Europe. For the same nations that went to ruins, now their refugees seek safe haven in Western civilization. One of the core reasons for this is, that Europe sees itself as the master, founder, and guardian of human rights, although after the conclusion of certain recurring events, this may change.
The Europeans don’t want refugees from Islamic countries, neither does Britain. Britain has gone so far as to choose Rwanda as a stopover and placement of these refugees. The contrast between then and now, is that in Islamic nations are facing a wave of Liberalism, which in turn is bothering the autocratic and semi-democratic nations. That liberal thought is having difficulty being recognized as positive, and similarly gains support from Western ideologues. As the advent of homosexuality and their groups has been a major topic in Western civilization and a showcase of concern in the East and South is prime example on difference of thought.
So the problem is as: Islamic countries don’t want liberals, Liberal countries don’t want Muslims, and worse of all, their homes are being bombed with no place to call home now.
Thus, ponders the question what would be the solution? Is now ideology going to be the new change of borders? Last time it was religion and population density, this time it may be different.
The Peace Treaty of Westphalia was a consensus among the richest Princes. I believe now we need a new Westphalia, a new Treaty that decides the movement of people and their concerns. A more direct and blunt set of laws, and easier access to safety for the well-being of mankind.
So the proposed solution is as such. Europe comes forward and accepts its distaste for certain groups. Similarly, Asia directs itself to the distaste of certain other groups. Neither can say anything to the other about their choices. This then leads to the unhappy populations among nations who don’t appreciate these laws. Then, comes the new clause: Movement on the basis of Ideology. If you are in a strict Muslim household, you may feel better living in Afghanistan. Where Sharia leads the troops,
where Islam is all. If you are a drinker and an extravagant artist with no freedom of expression, then Paris and Rome should be open to you. Obviously many will lie to use it as a gateway to foreign nations. This is where the law comes in your favor. The Europeans may offer strictness against those that don’t follow their liberal ideology, whilst the East does the same with theirs. And for even more Utopian Entertainment, why not construct a buffer zone of nations, with neutral beliefs, and openness to all? A great movie quote comes to mind, “What transpires within the confines of the Wall of Sodom, stays within the confines of the Walls of Sodom”
So far if you have read this, in your mind this would be satire and inappropriate. However, imagine for one moment: The West harnesses freedom for all that is not East, and vice versa, whilst, in the Middle East, the people come to be one regardless of race, religion, and culture. In my view,
either nations will be cleansed, or ideologies will win, this gamble in itself will prove the true achievement of governance. Politics will eventually die, and how you live and speak will be the way. A doable Utopia, that may be the only hope for the madness that is happening today.
